WHAT IS A DOULA?

Doulas support their clients throughout

the entire birth process;

from beginning of the early labor

until a few hours post birth.

This continued support includes:

Effective positions for each stage of labor

Nutrition guidance

Emotional reassurance on each step of labor & birth

Most doulas also provide the following services:

  • A complimentary interview to see if you want to hire her
  • Pre-birth meetings - which allow you to get to know your doula and make a connection before the labor begins.
  • Birth Plan Tips and Worksheets
  • What to expect when labor begins, as it progresses, and when it is time to have the baby.
  • Some doula's also provide constructive tips for finding post-partum doulas or nannies for when you bring your baby home

Why should I consider a Doula?

Many studies have shown that a doula’s support during childbirth can:

  • Considerably reduce medical intervention,
  • Decrease use of epidural or local anesthetics, and
  • Decrease the use of tool-assisted delivery such as forceps or vacuum, as well as
  • Decrease the need for cesarean section.

Many women may be nervous and excited about their upcoming delivery.

Some mothers may not have someone that they can count-on to be the solid support during this important transition into motherhood.

Some who have a support unit behind them, can also find doula services to be beneficial to help guide their birth partner to support her effectively.

“The doula’s role is to provide physical and emotional support and assistance in gathering information for women and their partners during labor and birth. The doula offers help and advice on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning. She also assists the woman and her partner to become informed about the course of labor and their options.

Perhaps the most crucial role of the doula is providing continuous emotional reassurance
and comfort.”
